Smart Living, Simple Control

A mobile app design

Overview

This project was created to be a new design for a home app where you can control lots of different devices in the same place.

Some of the challenges I faced while creating this app was creating a visual style that would work across all of the different screens, and figuring out how the navigation would work on the app.

This app is for people that like to control home devices easily from the same app. Most of these people are really familiar with technology and how to set up devices in their home that would work with an app like this.

A Spark Of Inspiration

To begin my research, I wanted to find apps that have the same function as the design I was creating. I found that lots of companies have created similar apps that have widely varying designs.

The apps I looked at the most were the Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, Apple Home, and Philips Hue apps. By looking at these apps, I was able to come up with an idea of what my app would look like and what it’s layout would be.

Starting To Charge

After sketching out what the designs would look like, I decided to make wireframes to see what the placement would look like on a screen.

I really liked the way all of the wireframes looked together and thought it looked very consistent across the screens. It was interesting to have to add different screens for different types of devices like a tv or a lightbulb where you could customize the color.

Plugging It In

Following the wireframes, I decided to add color and finish up the design. I thought it was interesting how much the color coding helps a user on a device by showing them what is selected on things like drop down menus.

I made sure to have things that were selected on a drop down menu be a darker color and have options be a lighter color.

Cross Wiring

After finishing the surface comps I decided to make it a prototype with animations. This made it so that a developer could view the design and better know how it works by seeing it in action.

Conclusion

This design was a great way for me to learn how to look at previous designs that other people in the industry have made and work to create a similar design.

In the future I think it would be a good idea to look at the navigation on this design and try to improve on it, but otherwise I really love the look of this design and how it all works together.

If this design was to be implemented into an app that you could use to control things in your home, I think that it would get the job done perfectly.
