A Tablet Website Design

Overview

This project was created to improve the experience of viewing a recipe on a website. There are lots of different websites that show off recipes, but they are usually not user friendly.

The main goal of this project was to redesign one of these websites to be more user friendly, but still achieve it's purposes.

The audience I selected for this project was people that like to view cooking websites on a tablet while they cook. Through lots of different wireframes and research into these designs, I was able to create a new version of viewing a recipe that is more efficient and helpful for users.

Sorting Through The Goods

Before I started to design for this project, I took a look at the current website for Joy Food Sunshine to see what could be improved.

There were several things I discovered that I didn’t like with the current design such as: the amount of ads taking up view space, how hard the navigation was, and how long it took to get to get to the actual recipe part of the page.

I’ve found that lots of these websites waste a lot of the users time by telling their life story and how the recipe came to be rather than just the important information that the user actually came to the website for.

I decided to implement all of these changes into my final design.

First Batch

After going over the current design of the website, I decided to try and use some of the changes I had thought up and apply them to a design.

This design reduced a lot of the fluff that is commonly found on these sorts of websites. Although, even though I had removed a lot of content that didn’t matter to the user, it was still a really long page of text.

One thing I tried to do to help the user was to add a navigation bar on the right side. This helps users by automatically scrolling on the page to what information they were looking for.

Even though this design looked better than the original, I knew there was lots of room for improvement.

New Ingredients

Following my first design, I looked into things that would make it even more user friendly. I came up with three different changes I could do to improve the design.

1. Changing the navigation from the right side to the middle. People naturally read things from top to bottom and left to right. Having the navigation on the right side is not very user friendly.

2. Making two different columns for the recipe to be displayed in rather than one long paragraph you have to scroll down.

3. Having the webpage read more like a book by formatting the information like a book and having the user navigate using buttons rather than scrolling.

Final Recipe

After making all of these adjustments, I ended up with a final design that I really liked.

I really enjoyed the way the navigation turned out, and how unique it is compared to other recipe websites. I think users would have a better experience using this website than the other ones that exist.

The process of going through the different designs and picking things to improve made the design turn out really good.

I think if this design was adapted to Joy Food Sunshine’s current website they would get more users that would come back to their website more often.
